A virtual simulator for neonatal resuscitation in partnership with the French Society of Neonatology

Perinatsims is partnered with the French Neonatology Society (Société Française de Néonatologie) to create a virtual medical simulator for Neonatal Resuscitation ( which disseminates new management recommendations from October 2016.

 

Context

Almost 6% of new-borns require resuscitation in the delivery room, the adaptation to extrauterine life necessitates quick team management to recover at the earliest effective spontaneous breathing. This prevalence increases when it comes to premature new-borns: 80% of less than 1,500 grams need resuscitation.

 

Perinatsims® New-Born Resuscitation features

The 7 clinical scenarios are destined for midwives, paediatricians, nursing assistants, neonatologists, intensive care anaesthetists for training and improving their skills over time.

Developed with Pr Saliba, Pr Guillois and Dr Godde, this basis of seven clinical situations of Perinatsims® New Born Resuscitation (NBR) must be mastered by the health professional for safe management.

The user personifies the leader and must ensure the resuscitation of the newborn infant in the given time.  The verification of the equipment as well as the configuration of the ventilation units, essential to the successful outcome of resuscitation, are also addressed.

Each treatment decision as well as the sequencing of the decisions over time have an impact on the vital signs of the newborn. This physiological motor allows the evolution in real time of the respiration, heart rate, oxygen saturation and the skin colour of the newborn.

 

From the point of view of teaching

MCQs on the major themes and a debriefing on the new recommendations as well as on the global performance of the care given by the medical staff are available at the end of the training session.

The repetition of each treatment until the mastery of neonatal resuscitation via a short and effective training enables the improvement of skills over the long term. The 7 clinical scenarios are to be carried out according to three levels of difficulties, allowing 21 specific treatments.

 

This training improves the reflexes, modifies practices and increases the self-confidence of health professionals.
